Humanitas has announced the winners of their 2023 Humanitas Awards — among them is none other than Tyler Perry, who won in the category of Drama Feature Film for his film A Jazzman’s Blues.

Each year, Humanitas, an organization run by and for writers, honors and empowers film and television writers whose work explores the human condition in a nuanced, meaningful way. In lieu of their traditional awards ceremony, this year Humanitas announced their winners in the press.

A Jazzman’s Blues is a coming-of-age drama set deep in the American South during the 1940s that follows forbidden lovers Bayou and Leanne as they struggle against decades of secrets and lies which keep them apart. The film, which was written, directed, and produced by Perry, made its debut last year at the Toronto Film Festival, and earlier this year received 4 nominations for NAACP Image Awards.
