People Magazine has shared an exclusive first look at Tyler Perry’s latest film for Netflix, “The Six Triple Eight,” including the announcement of the streaming release date on Netflix on December 20, 2024. Netflix has also released a teaser trailer of the film ahead of release.
“The Six Triple Eight” is an epic drama that tells the true story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion: the only predominantly Black, all-female battalion during World War II. The film stars Kerry Washington as Major Charity Adams, the battalion’s commanding officer, and Ebony Obsidian as officer Lena King.
Writer, director, and producer Tyler Perry shared with People that it was meeting the real life officer Lena King, who passed away earlier this year, that inspired his approach to crafting this film. “After one few-hour session with her I had a whole script in my head,” he says. Perry wrote an original screenplay for “The Six Triple Eight” based on an article written by historian Kevin M. Hymel that details the true story of the 855 women who joined the war effort and were assigned the incredible task of fixing the three-year backlog of undelivered mail — all while facing discrimination, unfamiliar surroundings, and the experience of living in a war-torn country. Their efforts and success sorting over 17 million pieces of mail allowed American soldiers to reconnect with their families and loved ones — delivering not just letters, but hope as well.
Perry wrote and directed the project, and produced it alongside Nicole Avant, Angi Bones, Tony L. Strickland, Keri Selig, and Carlota Espinosa. This film marks the latest release from Perry in collaboration with Netflix. Last year, Perry struck a multi-year first-look deal with the streamer, for which he will write, direct, and produce features.
“The Six Triple Eight” will be available to stream globally on Netflix on December 20, 2024. Watch Netflix’s teaser trailer below.
