Description:
In 1974, Ntozake Shange’s choreopoem “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf” made its stage debut, combining poetry, dance and music, and most significantly, placing the black female experience center stage. In lyrical, honest, angry, funny and tender language, Shange’s “colored girls” evoked the feelings woven into the fabric of black female life in America. Within two years, the play became a Broadway sensation, won an Obie and Tony Award, and would eventually be produced in regional theaters throughout the country. Now, thirty six years later, filmmaker Tyler Perry adapts this landmark work for the big screen, integrating the vivid language of Shange’s poems into a contemporary narrative that explores what it means to be a woman of color - and a woman of any color - in this world.
FOR COLORED GIRLS weaves together the stories of nine different women – Jo, Tangie, Crystal, Gilda, Kelly, Juanita, Yasmine, Nyla and Alice – as they move into and out of one another’s existences; some are well known to one another, others are as yet strangers. Crises, heartbreaks and crimes will ultimately bring these nine women fully into the same orbit where they will find commonality and understanding. Each will speak her truth as never before. And each will know that she is complete as a human being, glorious and divine in all her colors.
Lionsgate and TPS present a 34th Street Films / Lionsgate production. FOR COLORED GIRLS stars Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Michael Ealy, Kimberly Elise, Omari Hardwick, Hill Harper, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Tessa Thompson, Kerry Washington and Whoopi Goldberg. FOR COLORED GIRLS is written for the screen and directed by Tyler Perry, and based on the stage play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf’ written by Ntozake Shange. The film is produced by Tyler Perry, Paul Hall and Roger M. Bobb.

I just recently watched this terrific movie. I loved all of the actress and their unique stories and their reasons to keep on living. Having a close friend that did pass away at her own hands I felt all of their pain. And just like them I found a way to keep her in my thoughts very day and to live for her through me.

Hello Mr. Perry, I just want to thank you for this superb movie. I cried laughed smiled and fell in love while watching this movie, although it was extremely difficult to watch at times. I loved how there was no holding back when it came down to the issues and transporting that realness factor! Movies can be so sensored but you put everything forward. All of the issues in this movie are real and happen to people in this world. You are fantastic and please never stop making movies.

Mr Perry, I have loved all of your work so I was really looking forward to this movie. It was good aside from the horrible scene with the children being dropped. I had nightmares about this for a long time after seeing the movie. I just don't think some things need to be put in movies. Although I know the unfortunately happen in real life but isn't that bad enough. I can never watch this movie again. There should be a major warning for graphic childhood scene. Well on a lighter side I really look forward to your new tv show and movie in February. Thank you for your unique point of view. Tori McHugh

Dear Tyler Perry, I am saddened by the amount of profanity that this movie contains. Up until recently, your films merely contained "what the hell", and the occasional "damn", which I could justify as the extent of how far your conscience as a christian man would allow you to go. Even in your skit "Madea's Class reunion", when the A-word was included, it was spelled, not spoken, and was a play on words when the 'c' and 'l' are covered up in "class". But now, even several months after watching this movie, I continue to ask myself...what happened to the light on the hill? How are the actors who take part in these films (especially Janet Jackson and Whoopi Goldberg, not to mention the countless people who will watch it later) supposed to be drawn to the Truth if all they see no difference between us and the rest of the world? I wish you the best, Tyler, I really do. I hope and pray that this position that God's placed you in will be used as He intended, and not squandered. There are still people out there like Kim Kardashian who need Christ more than ever.

I just watched For Colored Girls for the first time today on DVD. Wow. What an awesome job you did with this movie. It was poetry within poetry. The acting was amazing. Every actress and actor in this movie brought their A game. This was obviously a labor of love for everyone involved. Like others on this page, I can't believe that it was not nominated for any awards. But Mr. Perry, you don't need their recognition. Just as you started your own Hollywood in Atlanta Georgia, you received your Oscar nominations and won from all of your fans that saw this movie and were never the same. Brilliant!!!

The movie "For Colored Girls" helped show the world, especially the black world that each character did portray the different emotional state of black women and why. It examplifies how black women need love from a partner, even though the person that they may choose could be wrong for them. It also showed how black women who have had some sort of trauma usually closes their hearts to another relationship. Whoopie's part was so significant about how black women look for Yashua in the church as their mate instead of finding a reality relationship and how women who never heal their hurt pour out their hurt on their children. Also, how black women who have been victimize becomes the victim. Most importantly, Janet part showed how black women know in their hearts that something is untrue about their partners, however, they still turn their heads, until something serious happens like AIDS. Tyler did a terrific job as well as the actors in this movie and I hope that our people will realize that we need Healing emotionally, physically, mentally and spiritually. I loved sharing my thoughts!! Rosemary
