This Little Letter Changed My Life

I did something about a year ago that was so liberating and freeing. You should try this. I'm telling you, it will help you.

I was asked by CBS This Morning to do a segment called "Note To Self". It's where you write a letter speaking to your younger self. Have you ever done this? If not, you should. What would you say to the child that you used to be? I'm telling you, it's amazing. Try it. Let me know how it moves you. Here's the link to the one that I did.

Hi Tyler, Thank you very much for the constant motivation, words of wisdom and re assurance that it does not matter who you are and where you are but life has its up and downs. I read once somewhere that it is not about how you fall but how fast you get up after that fall. Wallowing in self pity because of our circumstances as we grow up and or the mistakes that we make does not help much. Getting up and forging forward as well as trusting God is what keeps one going. My favorite verses are Jeremiah 29:112, Romans 8:28 and Psalms 103:11-13 and Psalms 138:8. I am slowly but surely learning to accept my failures and weaknesses. I strive to be a fully fledged Christian however I am still struggling with certain things and the verse above assures me that one day in good time, in Gods time, everything will be alright and that God will use me as his channel to inspire, motivate and give hope to those that may be experiencing or may have experienced a similar journey as mine. One does not have to go through certaing things to learn from others, nor do the experiences need to be the same bout there are certain elements that others may relate to, which may assist with whatever they are going through. God is using you in a powerful way and may he continue blessing you with wisdom and practical points of reference which make the messages that you share with us have that much needed impact. After all, Psalms 111:10 states that "the fear of the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom" and you are on the right track and forum. God bless you;-)

I never tried the Note to Self letter before, but I tried it because you told me it would help. I told my younger self to pay more attention to the smaller details and to always think positive, act positive, and you will get positive results. I also told my younger self that I needed to take my future more seriously and to never take any opportunity for granted.I had to smile to stop from crying. My eyes watered up while I was writing my letter because I feel as if I have let myself and my parents down. Its not as hard a pill to swallow when you know that you are average or mediocre, but when you are smart and intelligent and such a good person it becomes hard to get over all of the opportunities that you let s*** away and will never get back. I will do anything to make my parents and my brother happy. I know that you are a busy man Mr. Perry, but I need help from a person who knows where I am coming from. That person is you sir. I am a young smart african american man with plenty of dedication to succeed. I am very well rounded and I know that if you could take me under your wing or give me a chance at any job opportunity I will not disappoint you. I can perform any task you need done and I will always give my all because I don't want to ever feel as bad as I do now.

What you did was truly special and unique. Who would have ever thought to do such a thing. Bravo, to the man you've become, even the man you are evolving into! I'm so proud of you. I will try this myself. Don't know what emotional "can of worms" it will open. But I tell you that God has brought me a mighty long way, truly. Thank you for letting us be a part of your journey. Cynthia

Dear heart of God, You are truly a very special man. God bless you for sharing yourself...the bitter and the sweet, all of it. You inspire me to thrive. I need to dig up a picture of my younger self so I can write a comprehensive (ish) 'note to self', I've started a mental version and I find it liberating already. Its like making peace with myself at a great age....40s! Thank you Tyler, God bless you.
